Academic Honesty Essay Example for Free
donnish Honesty EssayAcademic misconduct and dis cartwheel is prevalent in institutions of higher learning, especially with online disciples (Staats, Happ Hagley, 2008). The lack of academic veracity affects the integrity of the institutions, of degree programs, and the character of current and future students (Staats, Happ Hagley, 2008). Studies have saluten that a student who strives to be academically honest completes work that is morally and ethically sound. They batten that all of their work is their own or that they have given credit to the original source (Academic Ethics, 2014). Academically honest students exhibit characteristics such as empathy, courage, and honesty more often than do less honest students. The high prevalence of these characteristics is a good predictor of a lower occurrence of academic deception (Staats, Happ Hagley, 2008). Honesty and Heroes A Positive Psychology View of Heroism and Academic Honest, a study published in the Journal of Psychol ogy in 2008, was performed to show how heroism is related to academic honesty in online students. The study showed that fifty percent of students involved in the study admitted to lacking academic honesty in their schoolwork (Staats, Happ Hagley, 2008).The first experiment involved 200 students from the Mid-west with an average age of 22. 3 years. Three measures were used to test voltage academic honesty, including courage, honesty, and empathy. Results showed that these measures were inter-correlated and lead to the potential for artifice and other forms of academic dishonesty (Staats, Happ Hagley, 2008). The second experiment involved 69 undergraduates from the same Mid-western institution with an average age of 20. 03 years. Results showed that most students reported cheating on exams or lying in their own interest (Staats, Happ Hagley, 2008).The authors found that those students who decided not to cheat had a high degree of academic merit which they defined as heroism (Staa ts, Happ Hagley, 2008). ACADEMIC HONESTY AND THE ONLINE STUDENT DOUET 3 Prior to reading this article, I hadnt put together that empathy, courage, and honesty ar some of the characteristics found in an academically honest student. I was surprised about the amount of people who admit to academic dishonesty. Scriptures tell us in Proverbs 1222 that lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight. In orderto please the Lord a student needs to work with integrity throughout their degree program and ensure that all of their work is theirs or is supported by those to whom the work is originally credited. I will apply the characteristics of heroism such as courage, empathy, and honesty in all of my coursework. I will ensure that all of the work that I confront will be my own and if I borrow any ideas from others, I will credit them for the work. The amount of academic dishonesty involved with college students is astounding, and needs to be correc ted using the Christian worldview which states that we should live and work with integrity. In Proverbs 109, Jesus tells us that whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways flex will be found out. The more concern students have for others, and the more noble-minded students and more morally sound they are, the less likely they are to cheat. By encouraging those virtues in the student body, the university will garner a higher degree of respect for the institution and degree programs that they offer. In conclusion, as we hear in Hebrews 1318, Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. This is not to say that it cannot be informative or persuasive however, it is a less formal statement with a more relaxed expression of opinion, observation or humor. A dear(p) informal essay has a relaxed style but retains a heavy structure, though the structure may be less rigid than a formal paper. The informal essay tends to be more personal than the formal, even though both may express subjective opinions. In a formal essay the writer is in a silent presence behind the run-in, magic spell in an informal essay the writer is speaking directly to the reader in a conversational manner. If you are writing informally, try to maintain a sense of your own personality. Do not worry about sounding academic, but make sure you avoid sloppiness.Explaining Writing or C at one timept EssayExplaining essays inform the reader about something they dont know. These are essays that teach, so you will often find this sort of writing in textbooks, instruction manuals and any info rmation source online.Your purpose in this essay is to inform your readers about an aspect of a concept they may not know about or have thought about before. These sorts of essays may explain and character, explain a vitrine, or explain what or who. See my other hubs for information on event and cause essays. The ReviewA review may be either formal or informal, depending on the context. Its goal is to evaluate a specific piece, perchance a novel or movie. This implies that the reviewers personal opinion walkovers a significant role in the process. Despite a degree of subjectivity, a certain target standard needs to be maintained and, as in a persuasive essay, your assertions need to be proved. The formality of the review will be laid by how much of the essay is analysis, how much is summary, and how much is your reaction to the pasture you are reviewing. A more formal review will not only discuss the work or its own merits but will also place it in context. Newspapers and pub lic magazines tend to review in terms of finance, e.g. is this enrol or film worth spending money on? Critical journals will attempt to determine whether a new novel or play has achieved something new and significant. A good review will discuss both these qualities and the importance of a given work. The Research EssayThe research essay leads you into the workings of others and asks you to study their thoughts with your own. Writing a research paper involves going to source material and synthesizing what you learned from it with your own ideas. You must find texts on the subject and use them to support the topic you have been given to explore. Since it is on the loose(p) to become lost in a wilderness of outside material, you must take plane sectionicular perplexity in narrowing your topic. The greatest inherent danger in the research essay is plagiarism. If your paper consists of a string of quotations or paraphrases with little input of your own, you are not synthesizing but copying, and you should expect a low grade. If any of the borrowings are unacknowledged, you are plagiarizing and the penalties are severe. The Literary EssayIn the literary essay, you are exploring the sum and construction of a piece of literature. This task is more complicated than reviewing, though the two are similarly evaluative. In a review you are discussing the overall effect and validity of a work, while in a literary essay you are paying greater attention to specifics. A literary essay focuses on such elements as structure, character, theme, style, tone, and subtext. You are fetching a piece of writing and trying to discover how and why it is put together the way that it is.You must adopt a viewpoint on the work in question and show how the details of the work support your viewpoint. A literary essay may be your own interpretation, based only on your reading of the piece, or it may be a mixture of your opinions and references to the criticism of others, much like a resea rch paper. Again, be wary of plagiarism and of letting the opinions of more experienced writers swamp your own response to the work. If you are going to consult the critics, you should re-read the literary work you are discussing and make some notes on it before looking at any other opinions. The Argumentative EssayThe art of argumentation is not an booming skill to acquire. legion(predicate) people might think that if one simply has an opinion, one can argue it effectively, and these folks are always surprised when others dont take for with them because their logic seems so correct. Additionally, writers of argumentation often forget that their primary purpose in an argument is to win it to sway the reader to accept their point of view. It is easy to call names, easy to ignore the point of view or research of others, and extremely easy to accept ones own opinion as gospel, even if the writer has not checked his or her premise in a couple of years, or, as is the case for many you ng writers, never questioned the beliefs inherited from others. Want to know what you think about something? Then write an argumentative essay. To be fair, however, youll find that one of the first things you must do is become an expert on the issue. When you assemble a topic, you should avoid writing about issues that cannot be won, no matter how strongly you might feel about them. The five hottest topics of our time seem to be gun pick up, abortion, capital punishment, freedom of speech, and in all likelihood the most recent, euthanasia, or the right to die. If possible, avoid writing about these topics because they are either impossible to win, or because your instructor is probably sick of reading about them and knows all the pros and cons by heart (this could put you at a serious disadvantage). If you have difficulty picking a decent topic for your essay, feel free to check out our list of good argumentative essay topics. Either way, the topics may be some bonny reading mate rial, because most people are somewhat aware of the problems and can accordingly concentrate on understanding the method of argument itself. But superintend should be taken if you read one side, you also read the other. Far too many individuals only read the side that they already believe in. These issues cannot be won for good reason each touches on matters of faith and beliefs that for many people are unshakable and deeply private. The Cause and Effect EssayThe cause and effect essay includes some elements of writing that might be considered more professional than those a descriptive or narrative essay might include. It is very(prenominal) important, for instance, that your tone be reasonable, and that your presentation be factual and believable. Sources are often required in a cause/effect paper, and your choice of these sources is important as they reflect on the validity of your paper. Additionally, the first-person point of view does not work you should sound objective and i mpartial. Consider the following sentencesI believe that gun control measures should be taken in every hamlet in America. Gun control measures should be taken in every hamlet in America. In the first sentence, the first person is used. This would work in a narrative, but here it actually limits the meaning of the sentence to just the writer, and it makes the writer sound weak as if he were justifying himself or herself. The second sentence is much more forceful. It makes a statement and does not limit itself to just what the writer believes. The purpose of a cause and effect paper is to be as convincing as possible, and to convince readers to accept the cause/effect as fact. The Comparison and Contrast EssaysThe main purpose and function of compare and contrast essays is obvious to find similarities and dissimilarities between two or more objects or things. This kind of writing requires the writer to be an observer in most cases it doesnt require scholarly research or any specific r eferencing. Such essays are mostly subjective in nature, and writers are required to come up with differences or similarities they are able to point out and analyze. There are different compare and contrast patterns for these essays, yet the overall essay structure remains invariable there should be an introduction, a few body paragraphs and a conclusion. While working on your compare and contrast essay, dont forget to use the so-called cue words. These words help you to tie paragraphs together by means of small logical connectors. For example, you can use words like on the one hand/on the other hand, this is such/in contrast, however, like, as well, too, unlike, though, but etc. These words will pull your essay together and will make it hold better. Check out an article that covers our compare and contrast essays in detail and good luck with your writingExpository Essay SampleThe Internet and SocietyModern society has undergone radical development in the last 20 years. Computers we re once just a means to solve mathematical equations. Rapid advances in technology have altered the way in which people interact with computers, as well as the functionality of these smart machines. With the advent of a worldwide and nearly universally accessible web, the way in which we interact with each other has changed drastically. concourse from all over the world can instantaneously exchange both business and personal information. Internet commerce has become a huge part of the daily lives of millions, as well as social networking and streaming media. Most recently, portable electronics capable of nearly all internet-related tasks have become a common possession for the average middle-aged American. The unlimited free exchange of information has changed, and is continuing to change, in very profound way, society at large. The internet is probably most famous for the ability to spread information, fact or fiction.(Nikolovska, 2007) Despite the many positive influences the inte rnet has had on our society, one cannot ignore the negative repercussions. Many vendors have become faceless, and the examination of goods prior to purchase has been reduced to pictures. While there are many reputable online stores, there are those with less good aims. People must be wary of any and all information sharing and purchases conducted online, to avoid the transfer of funds or personal data to unscrupulous entities. Likewise, information obtained via the internet needs to be scrutinized in order to determine accuracy. According to the 2010 U.S. Intellectual proportion Enforcement Coordinator Annual Report on Intellectual Property Enforcement The digital environment presents enormous challenges to businesses, consumers, governments, citizens, communities, and families, particularly as new technologies and platforms disrupt traditional business models, means of governance and modes of private communication and expression In essence, the Internet has begun to change nearly every aspect of our lives and shows no signs of stopping.Personal safety threats related to the popularity of social networks, especially amongst the youngsters, is another huge Internet-related issue. They are taking us somewhere exciting, but we have to work out how we deal with the fading boundaries these tools have left in their wake, and that means rewriting our social rules as we go along(Hoover, 2009). With the human race being a social specie by nature, it was inevitable that new advanced methods of communication would eventually be developed. The Internet has revolutionized interpersonal communication since its inception with advances such as email and instant messaging. More recently, websites devoted entirely to communication have emerged. The most popular example of such social networks is Facebook. Members of various social networks input personal data, upload photographs, and personalize many aspects of their own unique pages within the site. They may then connect and share this information with as many people as they desire. The social networks have gained such popularity that one is nearly certain to find their friends and co-workers via online means. implications are unforeseeable. A world in which all people may communicate openly with one another, regardless of the physical distance between them, was once no more than a very tempting idea, but is now the norm. The world is very much analogous to an organism, and to quote a fictional doctor all(a) organisms evolve and develop along patterns only recognized in retrospect.

The Role Of Gender In Leadership Management Essay
The Role Of Gender In Leadership Management renderAs women rise to the top of the organization or worry, they encounter a problem with al nigh half the employees regard little of their temperament, skills or lead qualities-they be non men. Its often touted that a big percentage of employees loathe working in an environment where the top com homophileder is a woman, however qualified, due to their despicable leading styles.Though the attitudes towards the social occasion of women in society may have changed dramatic everyy, and thanks too to the affirmative action as buttressed by the events of the World meeting on Women 1985 as well as the Beljing Platform for Action women are still perceived as cosmos less suited than men for managerial and attractership positions. Many local Recruitment Agencies source employees for various organizations in the public and private sector note that some companies prefer men for managerial and executive positions because men are perceived a s more than confident, dominating, competitive, aggressive and independent compared to women. There is a general perception that women even in leadinghip are susceptible to being emotional, overly sensitive, moody, easily threatened with a tendency to play favorites and personalize matters no matter their rung or hierarchy in an organization. This trait gives their mannish counterparts an edge, as being more confident and emotionally balanced. In Kenya the majority of key executives in the private and public sector are held by men. There are a handful of women in key positions such as Supreme Court judges, University Chancellor, the Cabinet, Parastatals Heads and the private sector. The widely reliable explanation for the small percentage of women holding top executive positions globally is the negatively charged stereotyping of women as less able draws. There are many differing findings from sociologist, management and lead theories and gender studies on this issue.BACKGROUN DAs women increasingly take up leadership positions, prevailing leadership styles of women and men continue to attract attention. Historically, gender, precluded most womanishs from becoming leaders and as a settlement, the assumption was that men were better suited than women for leadership, since the brisk models were primarily acquireed to accommodate men.The Kenyan constitution (Section 27(8)) prominently recognizes that the State shall take proactive measures to implement the principle that not more than two thirds of the members of elective bodies or decreed bodies shall be of the same gender. This is to enhance women liaison in leadership and nation affairs that prior to the new constitution were hitherto dominated by their male counterparts. Emanating from this constitutional endorsement, and recent affirmative action, women allow for actively participate in managerial and leadership matters but it could be an upstream swim in the face of the existing perception that despite being qualified women are perceived as less able leaders.2.1 Definitions of LeadershipLeadership according to Roach and Behling (1984) is the process of influencing an organized group towards accomplishing a goal. On the opposite hand, C.A Gibb (2000) extends the definition of leadership and states that leadership is a concept applied to the structure of a group to describe the situation when some personalities are so placed in the group that their will, feeling and insight are perceived to direct and control separates in the pursuit of common ends. Leaders are those batch in groups who are perceived most frequently to perform roles that initiate or direct the behavior of another(prenominal) towards the fulfilment of their goals. It is the role of a leader to obtain the commitment of individuals to achieving the set goals. However, leadership and management are usually confused and used interchangeably. Management is concerned with planning, organizing, directing, coord inating and controlling the work processes and practices including what the individuals do within the organizational set up. On the other hand leadership is about how one person can influence others to do what is required for the deed of goals. Nonetheless not all managers are leaders.Leadership itself may have nothing to do with management, it exists in groups rather organizational structures and therefore will sure as shooting also exists in the tellal organization where in management terms it may create problems in controlling workers whose influence comes from elsewhere, consequently not all leaders are managers.A manager from a chief executive, director, section head and supervisor has inherent authority to direct the works and behavior of others by virtue of rank, job description and authority. Leadership thrives both in formal and informal settings. The source of power can be ground on appellation or on personality. While power in formal leadership emanates from the appo inting authority and rank, personal leadership is where power derives from personal qualities of the persona concerned based on charisma, temperament. Personal leadership is conspicuous among entrepreneurs and empire builders such as Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic, James Mwangi of Equity Bank Limited.2.2 The Interplay of Gender and LeadershipAccording to existing research on gender and leadership, leadership styles can be categorized either as masculine and feminine, (Eagly et al., and 2000). Although there is general agreement that women face more barriers to becoming leaders than men do, especially for leader roles that are male-dominated ( Eagly Karau, 2001), there is much less agreement about the behavior of women and men once they attain such roles.According to Jennifer L. Bendahl (1996), masculinity and agenticism relates to traits associated with male leadership such as being assertive, controlling, aggressive, ambitious, sovereign, forceful, independent, self confident , and competitive. Agentic characteristics are ascribed more strongly to men than women. On the other hand feminine or Communal characteristics are ascribed more strongly to women than men and describe primarily a concern of the leader with the welfare of other people-for example, affectionate, helpful, kind, sympathetic, interpersonally sensitive, nurturing, and gentle.Another theory that distinguishes leadership methods is the traits theory, where leadership is centered on the personal traits and characteristics thought to be essential to direct or influence people. The theory propounds that leaders were born and not made. Hence the behavior exhibited by leaders can be traced to their personality and since women are deemed to be more subtle and gentle against the aggressive, dominant male, there is an assumption of male or female leadership approaches to leadership. This theory lends credence to the gender leadership based on character traits.Another leadership theory distinguishes between democratic versus autocratic leadership (or the similar dimension of participative versus directive leadership), (Lewin Lippitt, 1938 and, Vroom Yetton, 1973). Although democratic versus autocratic style is a narrower aspect of leader behavior than task- lie and interpersonally oriented styles (see Bass, 1990), the democratic-autocratic dimension also relates to gender roles because one component of the agentic norms associated with these roles is that men are relatively more dominant and controlling in other words, more autocratic and directive than women are.In the 1980s and 1990s, many researchers turned their attention to other types of leadership styles by distinguishing between leaders who are transformational and those who are transactional (Bass, 1998). Such leaders set especially high standards for behavior and establish themselves as role models by gaining the trust and confidence of their followers. They state future goals and develop plans to achieve them. The existing concepts and theories of leadership styles to wit democratic vs. autocratic participative vs. directive, transformational vs. transactional and laissez faire can be explained along styles that conforms to the gender construct of being male or female oriented. Female leaders exhibit more democratic and participative leadership styles, while men are credited with autocratic behavior perceived as negative when applied by females. That transformational leadership in contrast to transactional leadership is held as a superior form of leadership. Unlike task and relationship oriented leadership, transformational and transactional leadership are view along a continuum allowing individuals to employ both transformational and transactional qualities at one and the same time.A transformational leader is one who provides visions and a sense of mission, instills experience and inspires and excites subordinates and highly motivates them to became better and do better. On the other hand t ransactional leadership is based on rewards for achieving specified goals and is largely based on directing sought after performance and deviations and the need for corrective action. Organizational experiences vary with experiences and it is the ability to be flexible in particular settings that relieve oneselfs one leader better than other not the gender divide.Against this background of different leadership styles, it is observed that men and women exhibit different styles of leading. However it is been stated that cultural conditioning and religion plays a role in elaborating the different perceptions of women and men in leadership.RESEARCH PROBLEMWomen face a problem with almost half the employees regardless of their temperament, skills or leadership qualities, when they make it to the top or take up management. They are not a man. According to a survey conducted by the American Management Association, three canton of men say they would rather work for a man than a woman, wh ile a quarter of women also prefer to work for a man than a woman given a choice. German researchers have also pieceed a down side from women bosses with employees inform higher cases of heartburn, depression, headaches and insomnia.Women have been criticized as being easily threatened or intimidated, emotionally unpredictable, indecisive, irritable, moody sharp tongued vain and playing favoritism within cliques. An experiment was conducted at the university of atomic number 91 and tested 50 women in delivering a sad statement and found that all of them experienced pain, however when men were given the same statement they revealed less emotion with 12 not showing any emotion at all. On the other hand it is reported that women make better leaders on the basis of their attention to detail, they are considerate and make good mentors for their employees.OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDYThe main objective is to establish whether women make poor bosses and as a result whether employees loathe ha ving women as bosses. The show will also have these other objectivesTo find out the qualities that are associated with a good leaderTo establish what amounts to poor or bad leadershipTo establish whether employees prefer to work and report to a male or female bossTo determine what challenges women face as leadersTo find out whether women make poor leadersTo determine the preferred gender to head public and private organizationsTo determine the perception of Kenyans regarding select for a female presidential candidateRESEARCH QUESTIONSWhat are the qualities of a good leader? What are the attributes of a poor leader?Between male and female bosses, who is the employees preference as a boss? What attributes of leadership do women lack?Which gender is better at running public and private organizationsWould you take for a female presidential candidate in any presidential electionsSIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDYWith more and more women now taking elective and appointive posts its paramount to a scertain whether there are any valid stereotyping that will prohibit their ascension of the corporate ladder as able leaders by merit. Instead of exchanging old equipment like TV, print, and music, for new equipment such as computers, the Internet, and video games children and teens combine forms of media and continually increase sources of input.(Foehr, Ulla, MEDIA MULTITASKING AMONG American YOUTH)CoachingCoaching refers to developing the ability of a coachee by coah by various activity to improve the quality of coachee.Coaching is helping to identify the skills and capabilities that are within the person, and enabling them to use them to the best of their ability and by that increasing the independence within the individual, and reducing reliance.(Rixon, Nick,2007, UK Coaching Academy CD Goals and Motivations)As described by EricCoaching is a process that enables learning and development to occur and thus performance to improve. To be a successful a Coach requires a knowledge and understanding of pro cess as well as the variety of styles, skills and techniques that are appropriate to the context in which the coaching takes place (Eric Parsloe, 1999, The Manager as Coach and Mentor. pp 8)Coaching nowadays is not for only senior managers who could in return fulfill the demand of the organization in achieving the goal. But to that context coaching is now has great demand which also given to the lower hierarchy where staff are also required to do the coaching.1.4 Time counseling the immensity and benefitsTime management is that skill which helps one to enable effective response to the increase of efficiency and productivity. Strategies for Organizational Structure
Strategies for validational Structure1.1 Organizational StructureOrganizational Structure is the strategic mien by which organizations arrange (or rearrange) themselves (Galbraith, 1973). This is essentially important in determining how organizations plan on utilizing their resources , particularly their kind resources. To do so efficiently, certain questions need to pass on precise answers such as the specific responsibilities of each individual at heart the organization, to whom exactly they tarradiddle and around importantly the coordination process that is to be implemented to tot up together all these battalion and processes simultaneously.Bearing in mind that any framework fol meeked need to be consistent with the organizations main objectives, a formal strain defining the lines of authority from top to bottom (i.e. Hierarchy of Authority) is established which identifies clearly who is responsible for which personnel and/or tasks (Perrow, 1986). Traditionally, the authority of stopping point-making has been a centralise process (i.e. direct to higher-level worry), but with increasing challenges innovation in recent times, many organizations now encourage a decentralized decision making model which gives its members the authority to practise decisions without the need to consult their superiors. This has the advantage of producing a real-time response to problems by muckle who ar specialized in that process while at the uniform time giving employees certain autonomy which creates a sense of descent satisfaction and motivation. However this could lead to the undermining of upper management if not tackled properly. There equal 2 primary dimensions to organisational grammatical constructionThe Vertical Dimension relates to the hierarchy within a company by distinguishing the decision makers and people in charge. such(prenominal) organizations are considered to sport either a tall or a flat structure (See Fig.1 in addition A). It hol ds the Span of Control of these individuals, which refers to the number of people they are responsible for and in effect, those groups who report to a single manager (these differ in quantity based on the nature of the work, skill-sets available, organizational floriculture, management style and level of Formalization, i.e. documentation of processes, rules and regulations (Noshria, 1991). Due to the high number or levels found in a Tall Structure (can exceed twelve), managers tend to have a Narrow Span of Control where only 5 or 6 people report to any single supervisor. The converse holds for Flat Structures which have a Wide Span of Control where up to 10 to 12 people could be reporting to a single manager, depending on the tasks involved. In short, the taller the structure, the more than the Span of Control decreases. The Horizontal Dimension addresses the division and assignment of tasks and functions across various departments within the organization. Such organizations are c onsidered to be either wide or narrow. The structure that an organization adopts for itself is contingent upon a number of considerations like its products and services, the sort of customer base it caters to, the business strategy it employs and the management of disparate departments processes. The most super acid organizational types can be classified as follows (Fontaine, 2007)The Functional Structure which is more in line with the Vertical Dimension is perhaps the most viridity structure in the business world due to its simplicity and ease. By this structure, organizations set up themselves into distinguishable departments with similar skill-sets, managed by someone who is an expert in that trade. (See Fig.2 in Appendix A) (Ouchi Dowling, 1974)The Divisional Structure is more concerned with utilizing people with similar abilities across the entire business, wherever the need may be. Thus such a structure lies within the Horizontal Dimension. Such divisions may be based o n different product lines, consumer grocerys and even geographical markets. (See Fig.3 in Appendix A)The Matrix Structure is an incorporation of both Functional and Divisional Structures, although interestingly, it operates like neither. The foundation of this structure is still functional however different projects would require the pooling of these human resources from the various departments to serve their purpose. The project managers borrow their staff who are then(prenominal) involved in the project from start to finish. This is sometimes a challenge as there is a limited number of staff in each department and each project would have its own specific needs. However it is the most efficient of all organizational structures. (See Fig.4 in Appendix A) (Davis Lawrence, 1977)The Horizontally Linked Structure is a relatively new concept whereby an organization groups its people on the value chain of activities and processes that produce, market, deliver, and service the firms of ferings (Spector, 2007). (See Fig.5 in Appendix A)1.2 Organizational CultureCulture is a complex yet powerful force present in any organization that encompasses its workers values, beliefs, attitudes, port and shared assumptions. It is the moral compass that guides individuals in their actions at an unconscious level in all settings of its internal and external traffichips. Organizational Culture can be identified by 4 basic types (Cameron Quinn, 1999) (See Fig.6 in Appendix A)Collaborative (Clan) Culture This sort of culture is characterized by its ex constitute and friendly environment where people genuinely invest a lot of themselves in the work they do. A family system is at play where managers play enatic and/or mentor figures. There is a great deal of focus on group coordination consensus, and the organizations belief is that its greatest assets are its workers.Create (Adhocracy) Culture enterpriser and Innovative skills are highly valued in this culture with focus on individual initiative and freedom. The organization thrives by being market attracter by continually introducing new products or services , hence their stress upon risk-taking measures and experimentation as a unifying flavor. Long-term strategies focus on emergence and acquiring new resources.Control (Hierarchy) Culture way is governed by a strict set of rules and policies in this setting. Formal structures intend on maintaining dependency and low cost of their product with workers being commended on their performance, efficiency and consistency. Leaders are required to be efficiency-conscious with ultimate closings of security and predictability.Compete (Market) Culture This culture is perhaps the most cut-throat of all with worker competitiveness and goal oriented. Leaders need to be demanding, active and most importantly productive with the common unifying goal of success. The organization is in a constant battle to increase market share and penetration by providing competi tive pricing and holding the position of market leader. Long-term focus is on achieving measurable goals and targets, and building a strong reputation. It is important to understand that no one culture is break than the other. Each culture plays a critical role in an organizations success so long as it is in sync with the organizations goals. Recent studies conducted have shown that even within a single organization, there may exist multiple cultures (sub-cultures) besides the dominating one which once again should not be construed as a banish element. In fact many scholars remember the existence of sub-cultures to be a source of healthy competition and the driving force behind innovation within the industry. The understanding of organizational cultures is equally important for managers and owners not only to be aware of their employees needs but also in designing a workplace that complements such a culture.1.3 Effects on BusinessThe relationship betwixt Organizational Structure and Culture is one that is not clearly distinguishable. In general, the structure is designed to exist within a particular culture , in effect, aiding the culture to run with the consistency and efficiency that would be the sign of a booming system. Thus, organizational structure is primarily concerned with the setup of the culture. Traditionally, certain cultures have been associated with certain structures and each of these setups have their benefits and disadvantages.Functional Structure + Control Culture Since centralized decision making is prevalent here, top-management is in get over of most aspects of the business. This could be beneficial if the management is highly skilled and there isnt as much competence on the lower levels of the business but could be equally disastrous if such skills are in short supply in management. As a bonus, employees have the opportunity to learn a great deal from their seniors which could help in their career paths to take on decision making positions. Since this setup fosters perceptual constancy and efficiency, there is better collaboration with similar processes per group while making use of the economies of scale. The biggest disadvantage here is of lack of communication not only mingled with the different levels of the hierarchy but also between the different departments , leading to serious conflicts. This in turn affects each individuals priority on goals which tend to be more department-focused than that of the organization as a whole. Customers are usually also affected by such systems where they are passed on from department to department regarding issues they index have.Divisional Structure + Create Culture Since the structure is one which brings together different departments and the culture one in which individuals are advance to think innovatively, the endpoint is a well-functioning unit with greater opportunities to learn about the different aspects of the business. In addition to better response tim e to customers issues due to greater accountability, the wider span of control helps in developing managerial and executive skills. The disadvantage here is of a great deal of duplication of tasks because of the different units with all departments in it performing the same(p) function. This also spells out a reduction in specialization as well as a great deal of in-house competition between the different divisions of the business.Matrix Structure + Compete Culture The efficiency of this model is extremely high due to the continuous utilization of highly skilled personnel from different departments on different projects. Since these sorts of projects depend on a vast amount of practiced knowledge, individuals often have the authority to make critical decisions which also exposes others to a great amount of learning potential, even in scopes of fields beyond their own. Also departmental conflict is reduced due to the regular re-shuffling between projects , instead the competition i s between different teams. Unfortunately it is because of these same hasty groupings that employees can tend to get frustrated and confused about their new functions and who they now report to. Also a great deal of time is wasted in meetings to decide on the allocation of these valuable human resources. The above examples were just a few of many forms of different structures and cultures combined. It is important to note that for the specific needs of a particular business, some forms of combination of any 2 factors could serve them better than if the same set-up were used elsewhere. Numerous factors need to be taken into consideration before a decision is reached on which option is to be implemented , and it may also require the trial-testing of the different combinations practically before anything conclusive can be said in that regard.1.4 Individual portThe term Organizational Behavior actually relates to the collective dominant behaviors of individuals within an organization. As such arbitrary individual behavior would have the potential to do the following in an organization (See Fig.7 in Appendix A). The factors which distinguish a happy satisfied employee from a disgruntled unmotivated employee are highlighted in the MARS Model of Individual Behavior (McShane Von Glinow, 2008) which identifies 4 elements effecting employee performance Motivation, Ability, Role Perception and Situational Forces (See Fig.8 in Appendix A)Motivation is the set of internal influences behind an employees voluntary actions. In the workplace Maslows hierarchy of needs describe the fundamentals that serve such actions (Maslow, 1954) aim 1 Physical the need for air, water, food exercise, rest, freedom from diseases disabilitiesLevel 2 Security the need for job security, safe working conditions and overall stabilityLevel 3 Social the need for being loved, a sense of belonging, inclusion and workplace camaraderieLevel 4 Esteem the need for recognition, prestige and promotionLeve l 5 Self-Actualization The need for autonomy, development and creativityAn employees Ability are the natural aptitudes and learned capabilities that are required to successfully complete a task. This requires proper analysis of a persons core competencies and then matching them with the appropriate job.Role Perceptions refer to the beliefs held about what behavior is required to achieve the end results which include an understanding of what tasks need to be performed, their relative importance and preferred behaviors to follow through them.Situational Factors encompass the environmental conditionals beyond an individuals short-run control that constrain or facilitate behaviors such as time, people, budget and work facilities.Types of Behavior in OrganizationsA significantly important aspect influencing organizational behavior is a persons Personality. Personality can be described as a set of feelings and behaviors that have been significantly formed by genetic and environmental fa ctors and that explain a persons behavioral tendencies. Some major forces influencing character include cultural and hereditary forces, family relationships and social class. These factors along with others, contribute towards the 5 big personality dimensionsOpenness to Experience Sensitive, FlexibleConscientiousness Careful, DependableExtroversion Outgoing, TalkativeAgreeableness Courteous, CaringNeuroticism Anxious, HostileThe importance of the study of different behavioral patterns is essential in unleashing the potential of any organization by unleashing the potential of all individuals who work therein. The Locus of Control determines the degree towards which individuals believe their behaviors influence what happens to them. Whereas Internals believe in their efforts and abilities Externals believe events are mainly due to external causes. It is the presence of such personalities spread throughout an organization which deems necessary appropriate maneuvers to maintain po sitive behavior in as many of its employees as possible. In addition to the benefits already discussed brought about by such behavior to organizations, an equally important aspect is that of self-efficacy and motivation. The ability to adapt ones behavior to a given situation is not only an important learning tool but a vital quality to have in your possession in order to cope with the different cultures that now exist within organizations, while retaining ones unique identity. Furthermore the visualization of reactions to constraints posed to oneself might give them a clearer idea of the reactions of others to the same situation and possible tactics to handle it better.1.5 Organizational TheoryOrganizational theories can be in general classified as followsClassical Organizational Theory deals with formal organization and its concepts to improve upon management efficiency.i) Taylors Scientific caution tone-beginning (1947) This draw near focused on achieving efficiency, standard ization, specialization and simplification brought about by the planning of work. It also stressed on mutual respect between management workers to increase productiveness by implementing measures to reduce physical emotional stress of workers, providing them with appropriate training to develop their capabilities and by eliminating the traditional boss concept. Taylor suggested 4 principles of scientific management for improved productivity An employees work should be tackled in a scientific methodology, rather than by a rule-of-thumb. Hiring of members should be based on some analysis who are then trained, taught and developed. Management should apply a policy of cooperation rather than conflict with labors to achieve goals. Training of workers be carried out by experts using scientific methods.ii) Webers Bureaucratic Approach (1947) This approach took into consideration the organization as a segment of broader society, but was criticized for its rigidness, impersonality, unfeasi ble to bigger objectives and lack of initiative to improve status (Hicks and Gullett, 1975). The basis of the approach was on the following principles Existence of hierarchy system with clear amounts of responsibility and authority defined for each position. Rules and Regulations should govern the behavior of organizations to maintain predictability and stability. Hiring and selection of employees should be impartial. Designations and not people should be delegated responsibility and authority to maintain democracy.iii) Fayols Administrative Theory (1949) This theory relates to the accomplishment of tasks and touches on management principles functions and concepts of line, staff committees. Productivity of technical and managerial work can be improved by dividing and/or specialization of the work. Authority and due responsibility are essential in achieving organizational objectives. Being answerable to and taking orders from a single supervisor would be most efficient in unity of command. All members of the organization should have a common goal to provide them with direction. Organizations interests should be given priority over individual and/or group interests. Measures to retain employees by several methods (e.g. time incentives, bonuses, profit-sharing, etc.) Management should utilize a blended system of both centralized decentralized decision making. Members on the same level of hierarchy should work together to accomplish work (Scalar chain). The organization should try to establish equity, fairness and justice. Employees should be given time to settle into their work and be assured of the security of their jobs. Members should be encouraged to show initiative. Measures to strengthen unity and allegiance should be practiced which would yield better performance. Concept of line and staff holds equally as important in organizations as anywhere else. Members from different departments at same hierarchal level can form committees around common goals. Fun ctions of management include planning, organizing, training, commanding and coordinate functions (Fayol, 1949) as well as staffing, directing, reporting and budgeting (Gulick Urwick, 1937).Neoclassical Theory shed light upon the importance of individual group behavior and good social relations between all hierarchal levels to improve productivity as a result of high-morale brought about by such measures (Roethlisberger and Dickson, 1943). The neoclassical approach was based on the following principles All members of an organization should be treated with the respect that a human deserves rather than be classified as a tool and as such requires fulfillment beyond economic and security factors. The approach highlighted informal groups at work within the formal organization and its importance. Workers should be allowed opportunities in decision making processes that would allow for a new and more effective form of management besides increasing productivity.Modern Theories define an organization as a designed and structured process in which individuals interact for objectives (Hicks and Gullet, 1975). The theories can be broadly classified as followsi) The Systems Approach This takes on the view that organizations are undisturbed of systems and sub-systems which are mutually dependent on each other and may be composed of some components, functions and processes (Albrecht, 1983). So the organization has 3 basic elements (Bakke, 1959)1. Components that include the individual, formal and informal organization, patterns of behavior emerging from role demands of the organization, role comprehension of the individual, and the physical environment in which individuals work.2. Linking processes like communication, balance and decision making between the different components to operate in an organized and correlated manner.3. Organizational Goals like growth, stability and interaction between all members of the organization.ii) Socio-Technical Approach This considers a n equilibrium between people (the social system), techniques knowledge (the technical system) and consumers (the external environment) to be of great significance in determining the organizations effectiveness (Pasmore, 1988).iii) The Contingency or Situational Approach The situational approach takes into account that as organizations are highly dependent of their external environments, there can be no universal guideline suited for all situations (Selznick, 1949 Burns and Stalker, 1961 Woodward, 1965 Lawrence and Lorsch, 1967). The misfortune approach suggests that social, legal, political, technical and economic factors need to be taken into consideration before determining an organizations relations to different environments (Hellriegel and Slocum, 1973).

Macbeth Essay -- essays research papers
The Shakespearian tragedy, Macbeth has been said to be one of Shakespeares nigh profound and mature visions of evil. In Macbeth we find not gloom only when blackness, a military man who finds himself encased in evil. Macbeth believes that his predicaments and the evils that he commits are worth everything he will seduce to endure. In spite of this towards the end of the play he realizes that everything he went through, was not worth the crown, or the high price he had to pay of losing his wife, and finding himself alone. Macbeth is shown as a kind and righteous man in the beginning of the play. He is the Thane of Glamis, and a brave warrior among men and is highly regarded by the king of Scotland. whole these traits make Macbeth great. Conversely, several factors transform this one great man into a great tyrant and a malevolent murderer. Macbeth grows great throughout the play yet in reality becomes less and less as a man. Macbeth proves that wearing a crown and having the powe r does not fulfill all of ones dreams and fantasies. Being the king does not necessarily make the man.In the first act we meet the witches and the mood of Macbeth is set-dark, gloomy, evil, supernatural- a perfect atmosphere to accompany the tragic hero. When Macbeth first meets the witches he is at the height of his moral ascendancy. He is Thane of Glamis and he just slaughtered a traitor from the Netherlands in the name of Scotland. However, Macbeths curiosity begins to stir when these three witches tell him of his fate. All hail Macbeth Hail to thee, Thane of GlamisAll hail, Macbeth Hail to thee, Thane of CawdorAll hail, Macbeth That shalt be king hereafter(Act 1, Sc.3 48-50)Macbeth is already the Thane of Glamis and the audience knows that King Duncan named him Thane of Cawdor. However, the last two prophecies could not make sense to Macbeth, and what they reveal to Banquo is yet more puzzling.Thou shall get kings, though thou, be none.(Act 1, Sc.3 67)A curious Macbeth yearns to know more when the witches suddenly vanish. A moment later, the prophecies prove to be true. And, for devout of a greater honour, He bade me,From him, call thee Thane of Cawdor In which addition,Hail Most worthy Thane, for it is thine(Act 1, Sc.3 104-107)Macbeth wants to test the truth by asking Banquo if he also believes that the rest of the prophecies could be true. Banquo is suspicio... ...mAnd let the angel whom thou stillHast served tell thee, Macduff was from his mothers wombUntimely ripped.(Act 5 Sc. 8 13-16)Alone, confused, frustrated and attaint Macbeth dies a warrior by the sword of the worthy Macduff. In the fatal end Macbeth was called upon to pay the price for all his wrong doings. Macbeth could piddle been a great man. Macbeth was Thane of Cawdor and Glamis and most importantly respected by the King. Macbeth had a loving wife and a dear friend in Banquo and all this he yearned for, when he realized diminutive to late he had it already. Had it not been for his beli ef in his own charmed existence and his belief in supernatural prophecies, if he had listened to Banquos warning, he would have never risked everything he loved, everything he had, and his own life for that crown. If Macbeth did not have so much pride in his own ambition he would have been a happy and respected man.I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which oerleaps itselfand falls on the other.(Act 1 Sc. 7 25-30)Macbeth spoke these words in the beginning of the play and it was still to early in time, for him to realize how true that really was.

The Time Machine - Analysis :: essays research papers
There are numerous people in society who lack certain skills that they need for survival. These people whitethorn lack intelligence and depend on other human beings to help them getthrough life. However, most of the time, it is there fault that they lack these necessities. InThe date Machine by H.G Wells, the Eloi had this problem. They were victims of theirown weaknesses because they didnt commiserate that learning these important skills wasnecessary for them to survive.     When he arrived in the future, The clipping traveller, after butt againsting and hearing theEloi, reason out that they had an extremely low intelligence compared to the people thatlived in his time. They were often described as and compared to slender children. Then oneof them asked me a question that showed him to be on the intellectual level of one of ourfive year old children.(39) He was very shocked about this weakness that the Eloipossessed. The fact that the Time Traveller lived 800,00 long time in the past led him tobelieve that over time, the generations got less and less intelligent and more involved withhaving fun compared to the world where he lived.     The Time Traveller also realized that the Eloi were very dependent on otherpeople for many of there resources. He mentioned that the Eloi had houses and clothingbut he didnt see any machinery or anything that could possibly produce these items. There were no shops, no workshops, no sign of importations among them. (65) This ledhim the believe that there had to be someone or something that was qualification these items forthem. Since the Time Traveller had already know about the low intelligence of the Eloi, this didnt come as surprize to him. He was able to come to the expiry that the Eloicannot do very much for themselves.     Another fact that the Time Traveler came across was that the Eloi spent all dayplaying games and doing nothing of importance. He didnt un derstand how they could getthings done and survive in their world. "They spent all day of their time in playing gently,in bathing in the river, in making love in a half-playful fashion, in eating fruit and sleeping. I could not see how things were kept going." (65) He thought that the Eloi acted just likelittle children. The thing that puzzled him was how the society could function properlywhen no one took anything seriously. He never saw an Eloi doing work or anything ofvalue. As a result, the Time Traveller didnt understand how the Eloi stayed alive.
